Continuing apace with putting his personal funds into startups, top industrialist Ratan Tata has of late invested in the services market place, UrbanClap. The value of his investment was not disclosed. Operational in six cities – Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad – UrbanClap allows users to book over 80 services, including plumbing, electrical work, beauty, wellness, tutorials and wedding photography. The company has a network of more than 25,000 service professionals. The Tata Sons’ chairman emeritus has been aggressively investing in startups, ranging from e-commerce firms to cab aggregators. Ratan Tata has invested so far in firms like Snapdeal, Kaaryah, Urban Ladder, Bluestone, CarDekho, Sabse Technologies, Xiaomi and Ola.

AIR INDIA ON GROWTH PATH
Debt-laden Air India (AI) is planning a massive expansion of its international network, with flights to South America, Toronto, Spain and Africa, while simultaneously increasing frequencies to its existing destinations such as Dubai. Air India, which started operating a direct flight to San Francisco from December 2015, is also planning a non-stop to Washington DC. AI already operates non-stop flights to three US cities — New York, Chicago and Newark. “(The expansion plan) is still in the planning stage,” says a senior official, who did not wish to be named. “Next year, we will launch many new flights… . 2016 will be a year of consolidation and growth for AI,” avers Ashwani Lohani, CMD, AI, at an event during the launch of the San Francisco flight.

MAHINDRAS BUY ITALIAN AUTO DESIGN FIRM PININFARINA
Tech Mahindra and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) have jointly acquired a controlling stake in noted Italian automobile design house Pininfarina, wrapping up nearly eight months of talks that focused on valuation. According to reliable sources, the all-cash deal is expected to work out to nearly US$ 165 million (over INR 1,000 crore). The Mahindra Group companies announced that the deal was done through a special purpose vehicle (SPV), held 60% by Tech Mahindra and 40% by M&M.

SPICEJET MAY BUY 100-150 PLANES
Exactly a year after saving it from near-certain closure, Spice Jet chief Ajay Singh is all set to revamp the airline by possibly going in for a complete change of fleet. Singh says he will place a “large” aircraft order, indicating anywhere from 100 to 150 planes, this fiscal. Both Airbus and Boeing have sent in their proposals for the A-320 new engine option or neo, and the B-737 Max, respectively. Since Singh co-founded Spice Jet in 2005, the low-cost carrier (LCC) has been operating with Boeing 737s as the mainstay and years later inducted Bombardier Q-400 as its regional jet.
