Your favourite magazine has been endowed the honour this month of becoming the official “Reporting Partner” for the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, a flagship annual diaspora connect event of the Government of India.in January 2015 at Ahmedabad! A milestone no less for our own diaspora connect initiatives! And the last month was chock-full of events for our team, starting with an unforgettable journey to Mauritius, even as the island nation commemorated the 180th anniversary of the arrival of indentured labourers from India on its shores. At home, with two more assembly elections looming large in recently flood-hit J&K and Jharkhand, the poll fever grips both campaigners and the electorates in these states. The Shiv Sena joined the Fadnavis-led BJP government in Maharashtra at last with 10 ministerial berths, bringing a long Maha-drama to a close. US President Barack Obama accepts Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invite to grace the occasion of India’s Republic Day as Chief Guest, adding one more feather to the capful Modi already has garnered from his whistle-stop diplomacy at the East Asia Summit in Myanmar, the G-20 conclave in Australia, at Fiji and then at the SAARC retreat at Kathmandu in Nepal. Mauritius is our focus in Cover Feature this issue. It brings you up to date not only on the events organised as part of the celebrations, but also an infobrief and a teaser on the tourist endowments of the beautiful island archipelago. Our staple of diaspora connect continues in the form of Dossier, featuring some of Silicon Valley’s wizards, both past and present. We have included a feature on Madame Bhikaji Cama, patriot extrodinaire and the first woman to raise the first Indian tricolour in lands foreign, as an active campaigner for India’s freedom from the British yoke.
Indian Achievers brings you a third tranche of mini-profiles, where each persona featured is one who has succeeded against all odds to make a mark on the Indian entrepreneurial landscape. Most of our other thematic foci continue, while some take a short holiday and will be back in future issues. Heritage acquaints you with the last Hindu emperor of India, Travelogue brings you the third and last part of its Poland Trilogy, taking you on a walk-through of Auschwitz, site of WWII’s infamous Nazi concentration camp that extinguished countless Jewish lives. Real Estate brings you perspectives in the light of the new government policies. Silver Screen features the recently concluded IFFI 2014 at Goa, while news on milestone happenings, business and cinema are present in News Scan, Business Buzz & Cineppets. Satire this time is in Hindi, taking a merciless dig at Godmen, their adherants and their foibles. We have started receiving some nominations, though it is still a mere trickle. So readers, do send in your nominations, suggestions et al., and participate! The NRI ACHIEVERS BADGE OF HONOUR , the annual ‘Puraskaar’ we have instituted to express our awe and appreciation of the indomitable spirit of our INDIASPORA – our overseas Indians, in surmounting all odds and reaching for the sky in their multivarious endeavours, is just a few months away, slated for March 2015.
