If Rahul has even a scrum of Gandhi in him, if he has quaffed even a vestige of the Mahatma’s ideals or courage, the trait of being defiant in the face of adversity, he should learn from him.

Supplicated over his comments upon blaming the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamseva Sangh) for Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, Rahul Gandhi was told by the Supreme Court, “You can’t make wholesale denunciation of an organisation.”

“If you won’t apologise, you will have to face trial,” the court said pulling up the Congress leader for his remarks.

In 2014 at a rally in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra Rahul had reportedly said “RSS people killed Gandhi ji“. After that Rajesh Kunte, secretary of RSS’s Bhiwandi unit, had filed a criminal defamation case against Rahul. A bench led by Justice Dipak Misra prompted his counsel that the constitutional validity of criminal defamation has been upheld to ward off anarchy in the society and those making offensive statements must face trial now. “Why did you make a sweeping statement against the RSS branding everyone associated with the organisation in the same brush? You cannot collectively denounce a group,” said the bench.

----Defending Rahul Gandhi, Mr. Randeep Surjewala chief spokesman of Congress said that Rahul will not tender an apology over his remarks against the RSS and will instead substantiate them with historical facts and evidence before the court to support his claim. “On a suggestion of Shri Rahul Gandhi expressing regret or apology, the question does not arise. Such a suggestion has been made in the past and not accepted by Rahul Gandhi. Mr Gandhi is a mature politician with intimate knowledge of historical facts. Congress Party and Mr Gandhi will defend these remarks at appropriate forum.”

He said since the matter is pending adjudication, “we will not like to comment further on the issue”.

At the AICC briefing, party spokesman Gaurav Gogoi said that “Rahul Gandhi has denied to seek an apology over what he has said and will fight the case as he wants to present his facts along with historical proof and evidence to prove his point and help bring out the truth before everyone that we all know.” He added, “At this point, Congress party stands with Rahul Gandhi and we are confident that we will be able to present a strong case, present all the facts and historical evidence that we are supposed to make.”

Congress leader had sought to tarnish the reputation of the Sangh through his speech. Either taking the responsibility for his derogatory comments upon the RSS and proving that he is a mellow politician of the Indian democracy and respects the Right to Speech bestowed upon him by the constitution, he should come before the media and apologize to the RSS or he should be on the brink to face all remonstrance.
